Host Family Program

As a part of the METCO Program, Marblehead families are encouraged to become Host Families to METCO students who wish to participate in afterschool extracurricular activities, such as team sports, chorus, theater, etc.

The Marblehead METCO Host Family Program is an extension of the METCO Program. Host Families share a commitment to educational opportunity and racial understanding. This partnership provides security for traveling students and offers families from both communities the opportunity to share their urban and suburban experiences. Host Families also help to empower youth commuting to Marblehead to make positive life choices that enable them to maximize their potential by supporting, guiding, and being a friend and/or home-away-from- home to a young person.

Host Families support METCO students in getting to know their schools, and other local families through an ongoing, one-to-one relationship. They build these relationships by planning and participating in activities together. They provide hospitality and assistance for students in case of emergencies. The Host Family Program is not only helpful to commuting students, it is rewarding and enlightening to both sides participating in this cultural exchange. This program has been a part of the METCO experience since its inception.

The Marblehead METCO Host Family Program envisions a partnership in which students experience nurturing relationships and community support, which in turn allows each of them to develop into their full potential.

The Marblehead Public School System requires that all volunteers undergo a criminal background check (CORI) and be fingerprinted.

For more information on the Host Family Program and the screening/application process, please contact the METCO Office at 781-639-3100, ext. 2162
