Section 504

A 504 plan is a formal plan developed by schools to support students with disabilities and ensure they have equal access to education. It is named after Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities.

Here are some key points about 504 plans:

• Purpose: The main goal is to remove barriers to learning and provide students with disabilities with the same opportunities as their peers.

• Accommodations: These plans typically include accommodations such as extended time on tests, preferential seating, or the ability to take breaks during class. Unlike an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), a 504 plan does not usually involve specialized instruction and is not a subsitution to an IEP.

• Eligibility: for a 504 Plan: To qualify, a student must have a disability that significantly impacts one or more major life activities.  Examples Here
• Implementation: Schools are responsible for creating and implementing 504 plans.
