English Language Arts and Literacy K - 5

  • The Marblehead Public Schools ELA/ literacy block includes three main components: Foundational Skills, Engaging with Complex Text, and Writing. Oral Language is the bedrock of early literacy, and differentiated instruction occurs throughout our literacy instruction block.

Foundational Skills for all students are addressed via explicit, systematic phonics and phonological awareness instruction. Students participate in daily systematic instruction with active practice in foundational skills and engage in choosing and using authentic and meaningful complex text, reading for understanding, and responding to text. Students synthesize sophisticated understandings across texts, and these understandings are made explicit through reading mini lessons. Additionally, students participate in daily systematic writing instruction and learn the craft of writing through the writing process and active writing practice.
